Turn your original victorian floorboards in a beautiful floor

Floorboards Sanding

Floor boards sanding is one of our most common services. With original pine floor boards laid as subfloor back in 20th and 19th century, the floor boards have become increasingly popular over the last 10 years for restoration.

Should I Restore My Pine Floor Boards?

Seasoned pine is a great asset to any property. The pine, however, is a softwood and can suffer quite a bit of wear and tear over the years. If you, or the previous owners have sanded the boards already, it is a good idea to make sure that they can take another round of sanding.

The original Victorian floorboards (in majority of the homes) had a thickness of around 20 mm upon installation. Each sanding round slowly removes part of the surface until it reaches 15 mm. This is considered the point where no further floor sanding should be performed. Upon reaching this state, it is much better to instead install a new floor on top.

We Can Save Your Floorboards!

Any defects and damaged boards can be easily replaced with matching existing boards. It is part of the floorboards repairs service to improve the condition of your floor prior to restoring it, with supply of floor boards matching the age and size of the existing ones. The good news is we rarely have to. Most of the damaged floorboards can be salvaged unless they have already sustained irreversible damage like, for example, from rot or worms.

The Actual Sanding

The most important part of the restoration process is making sure that all the floorboards are in acceptable condition and properly secured. The sanding itself depends on the how well levelled is the surface. Every flooring expert knows that different situations require different approach. If the floor is uneven, it is better to sand diagonally because this way approach is more aggressive and strips more wood. After the surface is fairly smooth, it is better to sand across the length of the boards. Of course, if the floorboards are even, we always sand with the grain. This is extremely important because once the finish is applied, any sloppy work will become very noticeable.

The Beauty of Restored Pine Floor Boards

Staining floor boards can also be considered and it will increase your view over the interior ideas - dark shades, medium or why not a white wash or grey finished floor boards. As pine can vary in colour like no other wood, we always recommend staining samples to be provided on your own floors. And be assured, with our service you choose an extensive range of colours to play with - learn more about wood floor staining services.

Filling The Gaps in Floor Boards

Floor boards, unlike contemporary wooden planks do not offer any fitting method that helps them sit solidly together. With the passing of time, aging pine shrinks and leaves gaps between the floorboards. This little issue is easily resolved with our gap filling service.

Gaps with size of up to 5 mm are filled with mixture of sawdust and resin. The sawdust, collected during the sanding process is mixed with clear resin, created specifically for this very purpose. The end result is quick drying putty.

Wider gaps are usually treated first with wooden slivers, fit between the boards, or if the layout allows it, moving the boards closely would resolve the issue permanently without the need of gap filling.

Gap-filling floorboards is often considered a great way to make proper thermal insulation, especially for ground floors. However, it should not be taken as a way to provide sound- proofing.
