Floor sanding of parquet flooring in Leatherhead
The oak parquet flooring in this Leatherhead school was overall looking tired and in urgent need of renovation. During our obligation-free survey, we did a thorough inspection of the floors and discussed with the client all possible options.
Our client has decided to go for floor sanding, and finishing the floors in matt Lacquer.
Parquet flooring restoration requires many years of experience, skills and the right restoration equipment. Depending on the overall condition of the floors, the initial parquet floor sanding may start with coarser or medium grid. The aim of this step is not only to remove the previous finish and get the floors to bare wood, but also to provide a smooth level throughout the entire floor. Some older parquet floors may require more thorough work at this stage.
While gap filling is recommended in every parquet flooring restoration, on this project the client decided not to go for it. Floors, which consinst of small sized pieces of flooring like the herringbone, will also have many joints, which the lacquer will not be able to cover. Leaving these unfilled shortens signifcantly the life of the finish, as they become entrance for air-humidity and consequitive maintenance with mopping and water.
Sanding the floors with fine grids (80 - 120 gr) and a good rotary buff to the oak timber surface with high grid buffing screens is the most important stage in the preparation of the wooden flooring for finishing.
The parquet flooring was consequently sealed with 1 coat of primer and 3 coats of Bona Traffic Lacquer in matt sheen with another light screen buff between the coats, for an excellent final touch to the finish.
