• Whitewashed finish on wooden floors and how to achieve it?

  Hi and thank you for your question regaring whitewashed effect on wooden flooring.

  Achieving whitewashed / nordic finish on engineered oak flooring during floor restoration service with the use of either stains, lacquers or by using precoloured oil-based products. You need to be aware that there will be a slight difference in the appearance of the whitewashed effect depending on whether it has been achieved by lacquer or oil.

  If you decide to seal your floors with lacquer, whitewashed effect can be done in two ways. You can either use white pigmented primer like Bona White, or you can first apply white stain on the sanded floors and then coat it with multiple coats of clear lacquer. For our wood floor restoration service where staining is involved, we rely on some of the most popular products such as Bona Create Ice, followed by the application of three coats of waterbased Bona Mega lacquer in either matt, satin or gloss finish.

  If you prefer to achieve the whitewashed effect using oil-based products, then you need to be aware that this will achieve less uniform appearance.

• What does polish mean and can it be done on engineered flooring?

  Hi and thank you for contacting us with your question about cleaning and polishing of engineered wood floors.

  The first thing that you need to be aware of is that cleaning and polishing service is not applicable for floors which are badly damaged and where the existing sealant has worn out. It is rather a service that is performed on wooden floors which are ina relatively good condition without any parches that do not have any sealant left and is merely done to provide an exrea coat and extra protection to the existing sealant. By doing this, cleaning and polishing can prolong the life of varnished floors before they need to be sanded and revarnished. Cleaning and poslishing can be done on any wooden floors which have been sealed with varnishi, including engineered wood flooring, parquet flooring and any solid wood floorings.

  Having said that, if the sealant on your floors has already worn out, then cleanign and polishing will not be possible and in this case a torough sanding and revarnishing will be required in order to completely remove the existing sealant and to apply new varnish on top of the sanded floros. 

• How many times I can restore my engineered wood floors?

  Hi Richard,

  There are 3 standards of thickness in engineered wood flooring - 20 mm, 18 mm and 14/15 mm. Each of those will have different thickness of top layer (oak, walnut, beech, maple, etc), which will vary between 3 mm and 6 mm.

  Every time engineered wood floors are sanded approx. 1 mm will be removed by the restoration itself, however another 1 mm should be allowed for difference factory defect difference and the level of the floor throughout.

  So, technically - 3 mm top layered floor can be sanded only once and a 6 mm top layer, should be able to achive 3 or even 4 restorations.

And Some Frequently Asked Questions...

• How many coats of lacquer are included in your service?

  For domestic floor sanding services, we apply 1 coat of primer followed by 2 coats of lacquer. You can choose from the available sheen options, which are extra-matt, matt, satin, and gloss.

  For floor sanding in public spaces (offices, schools, church halls), we use 1 coat of primer and 3 coats of high quality commercial-grade lacquer. Sheen options available are extra-matt, matt, and satin.

  Extra coats are available upon request, but we do not recommend more than 5 coats, including primer.

• Do you replace original floorboards with seasoned / reclaimed material?

  Yes, in our floorboards repairs service we only work with seasoned pine material, which will reflect the age and colour of your existing boards as closely as possible. This ensures a seamless integration with your current flooring.

  If the natural color of the new boards does not perfectly align with the existing ones, we can perform local staining to achieve a better match.

• Is gap filling covered by your Service Guarantee?

  Gap filling with saw-dust and rasin filler on floorboards is exempt from our Service Guarantee.

  While working on the surface of your floors during floorboards sanding / repairs we endeavour to make every effort to increase its solidness, before proceeding with the gap filling. It is in fact the solidness of the floor boards, as well as the condition of its support (joists) that will define the durability of the gap filling, not the quality of the product we use or our service.
